2.2. Compression check


At obvious reduction of engine capacity, increase in fuel consumption or unstable frequency of idling, check the following:

      – ignition system;
      – a compression in engine cylinders;
      – fuel system.


1. Be convinced that the storage battery is completely charged. If necessary charge the battery.
2. Warm up the engine to working temperature.
3. Remove the central cover from the engine.
4. Disconnect high-voltage wires and ignition coils.
5. Turn out all spark plugs.
6. Insert a compression measuring instrument into an opening for a candle of the 1st cylinder.
7. Ask the assistant to press against the stop a pedal of an accelerator and for some seconds to include a starter.
8. Write down the maximum indication of a measuring instrument of a compression.

9. Similarly check a compression in other cylinders.

The nominal compression – 1275 kPas, thus a compression difference between cylinders should not exceed 98 kPas.

10. If a compression in one or several cylinders lowered, through an opening for a candle fill in in the cylinder a small amount of engine oil and repeatedly check a compression. Write down the maximum indication of a measuring instrument:

      – if the compression increased, probably, are worn-out, the piston, piston rings or a cylinder wall;
      – if the compression still low, means, is worn-out or the valve or a valve saddle burned through;
      – if the compression lowered in two next cylinders, probably burned through laying or the interfaced surface of a head of the block of cylinders is deformed.
